Hi! I’m Katy, the creator of Learner Vegan.
I went vegan for the animals. I’d grown up with all manner of pets – rabbits, cats, guinea pigs, gerbils, even stick insects! I loved animals. To me, they were all individuals, had personalities and deserved their best life, just like us.
At age 12, I had a late realisation of where meat came from. At school, we saw a video about how food is produced (including slaughterhouse footage). A few things added together for me and I made the connection.
I couldn’t eat animals anymore.
For the next 12 years, I was your average vegetarian. Lots of cheese and eggs, thinking veganism was a bit extreme for me, pointless, that I was doing ‘my bit’. But I was still interested in animal welfare, and things kept popping up on social media that made me uneasy. The free-range egg myth, cows being forcibly impregnated, calves and day-old chicks being killed as by-products of egg and milk production. Plus so many marketing terms that were great for us (grass-fed, British beef, free-range), but made animals’ lives an absolute misery. I did a lot of research and found out it was all true. How could I NOT go vegan once I knew?
I’ve been vegan for 6 years now. It hasn’t been what I expected at all. I eat great food, have good health, and amazing vegan friends around me. But when I first decided to go vegan, I went through so many changes. Dealing with family’s opinions, living with a (then) non-vegan husband and daughter, wondering about nutrition, and changing my whole mindset. I’ve also been through two healthy vegan pregnancies, eating plant-based for health, and now helping others to go vegan.
I’m extremely passionate about showing people how easy veganism can really be. It’s great for the animals, your health and the environment. But like me, you might be finding it hard to navigate at first.
One-on-one coaching can be ideal! Sometimes you don’t want to keep using google and staring at a screen… it’s nice to connect with someone, have an open conversation, get answers to YOUR specific questions, and hear a friendly voice!
